  Canadian Adult Achievement Test

The General Educational Development (GED) Test is designed for people who, for various Leasons, did not graduate from high school but want a certificate equivalent to the traditional high school diploma. The examination tests knowledge in five subject areas: Language Arts, Writing; Language Arts, Reading; Mathematics; Science; Social Studies.

The GED Test Battery consists of five (5) subtests that measure the essential academic skills and concepts of a traditional high school education.

Language Arts, Reading:  33 minutes
Language Arts, Writing:  38 minutes
Mathematics:  22 minutes
Science:  40 minutes
Social Studies:  45 minutes

The examinee must pass each subtest with a minimum score of four hundred and fifty  (450) points

Who can take the GED test?
To write the GED Tests in Ontario, you must meet the following four requirements:

  1. be at least 18 years old*
  2. have not graduated from high school
  3. have been out of the school system for at least one full year
  4. be a resident of Ontario

*Candidates who are 18 years old must provide a date of leaving letter from the last high school they attended. Home-schooled candidates must provide a letter from their Board of Education indicating that they have been home-schooled.

The CAAT is a unique measure of an adult's current functional level in mathematics, reading and language. This battery of achievement tests has been designed specifically for the Canadian adult, regardless of his or her previous school experience. CAAT helps determine an individual's present educational level and readiness for literacy instruction, general academic upgrading, core skills development and vocational selection.

The test is available here only in three levels in English (B, C, D).

Level B
measures 4 - 6 years of formal education,
Level C
measures 7 - 10 years of formal education,
Level D
measures 11 - 12+ years of formal education

The Level D was developed in response to an expressed need for a more stringent, academically oriented test, for use with higher performing adult students at the upper high school and post-secondary levels.

If the entire battery is administered, Level B and D takes approximately 3 hrs, 30 min. and Level C approximately 4 hrs and 30 min. Individual subtests of the CAAT can also be administered to shorten the total testing time. Time allowed is indicated at the beginning of each subtest.
